Angelina Karamory is the adopted daughter of a conservative karamoy clan in East Java, Indonesia. Her real name is Angelina Ruth Yaphet, while Angelina Karamboy was commonly called Angel Karamoy. As a child, she was taken to live with her half-brother, Yusef, who was a bar owner. She was constantly exposed to violence, and by the time she was a teenager, she decided to move to Australia, which is when she fell in love.
One of the most interesting details about Karamory’s early life in Australia is that she was married to an American man, Michael Kumar. This man served jail time in India for drug trafficking and was ultimately released after serving eight years in Australia. After getting out, he brought his family with him, and they settled in Sydney, where Angelina eventually became pregnant. Michael was a kind and generous man who provided support for his family, but he and Angelina were hardly in love, as they were just newlyweds.

She met and married another man, Richard Tainer, and moved in with Tainer’s family. When Tainer was killed in a plane crash in 1997, Angelina was devastated and thought she would never see her birth sign again.
In her bio-biography of Angel Karamoy for The New York Times, journalist Elena Kelly quotes Angel Karamoy as saying, “I never lost sight of my dream. I wanted to be a family man, go to school, find a job. And I did. But what I learned in growing up in Indonesia, in particular, made me rethink my decision not to have children. I am thankful that I was able to save my daughter from a life of crime.”
