Condola Rashad is an American actress most well known for her role as Serena Woolfine in the play Waiting For Superman. She later went on to star in such films as A Few Good Men and Something Like Birds. However, her greatest and most memorable contribution to the industry was her breakout role as Coraline’s mother in the animated film adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Coraline. Rashad then went on to star in the feature adaptation of the same book, The Nightmare Before Christmas.
Most people who follow the career of a famous celebrity have no doubt heard of Condola Rashad. If not, they would know her from her appearances on the television shows Happy Days of Thunder. In addition to her role as Happy Days’ cheerleader, Condola Rashad also guest-starred on the long-running sitcom Gilligan’s Island, playing the delightfully cynical attitude of Presser, the show’s dim-wit girlfriend. From her appearances on television, it is easy to see that the actress has a wide fan base. However, one aspect of her career that many people are unfamiliar with is her role as Serena Woolfine in the movie adaptation of Coraline.

- She is named after her paternal grandmother, Condola Moore.
- Her parents divorced in February 2001.
It may not be common knowledge, but in December of 2021, Condola Rashad was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance as Serena Woolfine in the movie adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Coraline novel. She is one of only three actresses to win an Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role, Best Score, and Best Visual Effects. She will next be up against Meryl Streep and Christoph Waltz for the role of Alice in the movie The Great Beauty.
Considering the role of Serena Woolfine, who is an outsider in the world of her own family, was no easy task for Condola Rashad. She has previously appeared on Broadway in plays such as Baby Did a Bad Thing and As You Like It, so her ability to adapt to the format of Hollywood is something of a credit to herself. However, if you are looking at her filmography, then it would appear that her first two films were made with an eye on commercial success, rather than the prestige of an Academy Award. The pair of films that she was involved with, namely Happy Days and Office Space, managed to gross relatively well at the box office despite poor reviews.
However, the reviews of the film seemed to be tepid at best, with most viewers citing poor performances by the lead character as the reason they were not satisfied with the film. In fact, her casting in these two films was criticized by a number of film critics, with some even calling her appearance in Saw 3 purely a pay raise for her previous roles. In her role as the teenage cheerleader in Saw 3, however, Condola managed to gain notice for another important part of her repertoire, as the actress known as Blondie in the film. Her co-star Christian Slater was another Hollywood favourite due to his strong performances as an anti-hero in the movie, whilst receiving warm praise from critics for his appearance as the father in Office Space. In December, both of these films hit their stride with the release of Christmas list film Finding Nemo, which went on to become one of the year’s most successful films.
Clearly, Condola Rashad has the looks and the personality to succeed in Hollywood, and should we expect the same from her in the future? Given her upbringing on a Caribbean cruise ship, where her family lived for much of her childhood, and her upbringing in Texas, there is every chance that she will take the lead in one of the many sequels to Finding Nemo or a similar franchise. For now, she has established herself firmly as an actress that everyone can connect with, whether they have seen her in Saw or not.
