Cousins Day in India 2023 Wishes Message Status in Hindi, English, Bengali, Tamil

Cousins’ Day is celebrated on the full moon of the Hindu month Shravan, on the day after the full moon of Karthik (January) in Indian astrology. The full moon celebration of Shravan gives India a chance to reflect on ancient dynasties that have ruled the country for thousands of years. During the last thousand years, when the country was under the Western rule, there were no significant dynasties in India. Therefore, the celebration on Cousin’s Day is considered as a great celebration of the heritage and culture of the country.
There are different types of celebrations that take place all over India on this day. For example, in the south, celebrations on the day include family gathering and gifts are distributed among relatives. The gifts may include utensils, furniture, carpets, lamps, carpets etc. In the Northern region, on the other hand, there are other celebrations which do not include any gifts or family gatherings. The day is observed only when a boy meets his deceased father, who is considered to be a great relative of the family.

In some families, the day is celebrated with a pujama ceremony. This pajama ceremony is attended by all the female relatives of the groom and they remove their hat or white silk gown, spread it on the ground and put a calf’s horn inside it. The female relatives then raise their hands and pray for the happiness and prosperity of the groom. The groom then enters inside his house and takes a bath before being awarded the head-dress or the chokri, which is a golden crown made of gold or silver. The head-dress is considered to be an auspicious item as it indicates the future success of the groom. After being crowned, the groom leads the celebration by presenting the chokri to his parents and other relatives.
Another interesting way of celebrating the day is the ‘Dahi Handi’ festival. During this celebration, the hands of the children are decorated with special items like ghee or clarified butter, almonds and dry fruits. After being decorated, these items are placed on the forehead of the parents and other close relatives of the groom. The celebration ends with the burning of effigies of the gods of fertility and good luck on the eve of the day.
