She has always been fascinated with singers and actors and even went to see her first musical when it was called Mambo Mouth at the age of seven. At the age of seventeen she won a title for best television actress in a competition held by the Sundance Channel in December 1991. Her win made her eligible for the 1997 Academy Awards, but she ultimately lost out to Jennifer Aniston for the role of Selma Boujold in Edward Scissorhands.
After that film became famous Desy went on to play an evil witch in the live action series Magicians, The Prophecy, Bridesmaids and the Sixties. This show lasted for four seasons, lasting until the first season was canceled by NBC. She then appeared in the movies Crazy Heart, Black Book, Pleasantville, Kung Mangina and finally Desperate Housewives, all of which earned her a second Golden Globe nomination. Desy Ratnasari was born in 1973 in Mumbai. She was one of seven children of an engineering family. Her father was a contract employee for a soda manufacturing company and her mother was a talented singer. Desy’s younger sister Ritu was considered very pretty and was often encouraged by their mother to get into movies and theatre. But Desy refused to do so, even though her sister was studying at college.
In August of 1992, Ratnasari started a successful performing career when she appeared in the musical comedy Noises Off. The movie, which went on to become one of the most successful comedies of the year played mainly in English. Desy was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role and was nominated for the same category for the next three consecutive years. She has also been nominated eleven times for an outstanding contribution to the world of theatre.
After appearing in a few films, Desy Ratnasari decided to concentrate on performing music instead. She had some trouble finding work in the early seventies but her performances were well received and she finally achieved commercial success with her album What We Are Together. Her seventies hit song, Kismet K Fasni, was inspired by the real-life situation faced by women in that time. Although she retired from performing live shows in the early eighties, she still toured her home country Indonesia. Her Jakarta concert in 2023 was covered by many international news media.
