History of World Earth Day

At the UNESCO conference in San Francisco in 1969, peace activist John McConnell proposed to start a day in honour of Mother Earth, originally from the concept of peace. This day was first celebrated on March 21, 1970, as the first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. Later in the day, a proclamation was approved to maintain the balance of nature, written by McConnell and signed by Secretary-General Uthant.

A month later, US Senator Gelard Nelson launched Earth Day as a separate educational day. It first occurred on 22 April 1971.
