She went on to study martial arts with her father before studying acting in Beijing. Gao Xiumin became known for her role as Chen Xian in the popular Chinese film The Kung Fu Panda.
Gao Xiumin later went on to star in Hollywood as Jade in the hit movie Wu Gui Zhen. She has gone on to feature in other movies including Romance Heart, Rise of the Legend, and Tombstone. Gao Xiumin is best known for her roles in martial arts films. She is best known to audiences in the west for her role as kicking mother in Tombstone. Gao Xiumin biography can be loosely deciphered from her many public appearances. It was revealed in the late 90s that Gao Xiumin suffered from mononucleosis. This was her first public admission of having the illness. However, some sources claim that Gao Xiumin may have also have been suffering from smallpox at one point in her life. Gao Xiumin has not ruled out the possibility of having gotten the illness from her boyfriend at one time.
Based on the information found, Gao Xiumin passed away from breast cancer at age forty-four. Her biographer, Jhessica Yang, did find some proof in the form of a scar she had sustained during the mastectomy. Gao Xiumin had also undergone a hysterectomy. This is when her hysterectomy was documented in the Chinese Cultural Revolution Museum. Jessica Yang believes this is where Gao Xiumin learned to fight as an actress in the martial arts.
