Born into poverty as a daughter of poor farming families in rural China, Gong Li was forced to marry a wealthy man. He beat and harassed her as a young woman and Gong Li developed a strong sense of independence. When her marriage was finally arranged, Gong Li trained hard at an iron dancing school. This gave her the physical strength and body training required for an actress. In her early days in the theater, she worked alongside her sister, who was then known as Jackie Chan, in small theater companies. The two quickly developed a fierce fighting bond, and soon after Jackie Chan died, Jackie stepped into the role of leading lady once again, this time replacing Chow.
A bright and beautiful young girl, Jackie Chan had already established himself in the world of martial arts when he decided to study kung fu with legendary teacher, Zhang Yimou. While there, he would learn many things about himself and his destiny, which would shape his later career. Together they created the Kung Fu Panda franchise, from which three films have been produced and released. Today, Jackie Chan is one of the most popular Chinese actresses in the world.
Another well-known Chinese actress is Gong Li. Born in Beijing, she has always been an energetic presence on the screen, playing the lead role in one of her father’s movies, before moving onto bigger and better roles. Her first two films that were made by Wanda Suzuki were The Wedding Speech and Meet the Parents. Both of these films won several awards at the Asian Film Festival.
After making a few more films with Suzuki, Gong Li decided to try her hand at moviemaking, and that is where her true career began. Her first feature was Romance, opposite Chow Tien Eng, where she played the lead role. Her roles in this film helped her to gain notice, and her performance was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role. She then went on to play the lead role in The Man With One Red Shoe, which was a hit in both China and Japan. The Man With One Red Shoe also earned Gong Li the Best Actress award at the Venice Film Festival. After this success, she was nominated for an Oscar, for What Happens in Vegas and Before I Forget.
Now, Chinese actresses such as Jackie Chan and Gong Li are seen acting in Hollywood and even receiving Best Actress awards. However, the two actresses are very different from one another, as they are much different from their predecessors. They have gone from being relatively unknown to being well known, but their place in the hearts of their fans is undiminished.
