Brothers Day in India is celebrated on the third Sunday of the Hindu month of Magadh (January) every year. It is a common ritual on this day for the brothers to meet in a family get together and spend time with each other. Traditionally, the get-together is arranged by a brother’s brother and is attended by other family members, relatives, friends, and others. The place of the venue and the duration of the gathering depends on the norms and customs prevailing in the particular region.
Indian traditions dictate that on this day the brother’s three uncles, aunts, and cousins, visit their aunts, share gifts, eat food and participate in a regional sport or two. On the third Sunday, the sisters visit their brother’s home and give him dana (preparation) and sweets. On the auspicious occasion of Brothers Day in India, the town of Mathura gets flooded with footfalls of people carrying cards and brooches. A local festival, ‘Tikta-Tikta-Ghrut-Ghan-ati’ gets celebrated in Mathura. This festival is celebrated in both the local dialects – Marathi and Hindi, though Marathi words are used in the Hindi version.
