He gets help from his friend Sandy Lyle, played by Carol Burnett, and ends up getting back together with Desiree.

Joan Cusack then went on to star in the successful movie The Game, where she played the titular character of the same name. She played the part of the high school quarterback who was being forced to transfer to the new York City campus after being kicked out of her previous college. Her performance earned her three Academy Awards, including Best Actress in a Leading Role. After the award for The Heartbreak Kid, Joan Cusack decided to concentrate on playing the role of a supporting character in movies, rather than starring in them.
