She dropped out of college and joined the burgeoning movie industry in Taipei but in the end she decided to pursue an acting career in Beijing.
Li Bingbing’s official public profile lists her as seventeen years and eight months old when she appeared in her first film role, in the comedy Kung Fu Panda. It has been said that Li Bingbing actually auditioned for that role with her parents in mind. However, the truth is that Li Bingbing actually auditioned for a series of roles in movies before her famous role as the red-headed girl in Kung Fu Panda. It is said that Li Bingbing’s parents tried to stop her from going on to bigger roles in order to encourage her natural beauty and to help her avoid the “stature”. Some sources claim that Li Bingbing once asked her mother in Mandarin to dye her hair the colour of blue so that her hair would look more like a cat’s tail, which according to Chinese traditional law should belong to the female.
After a series of years working in the Taipei film industry, Li Bingbing moved to Hong Kong in the early 1970s, to work with the most notable director of that time, Chow Ting-yeh. During this period, Li Bingbing slowly established a body of work that earned her critical acclaim throughout the world, and which led to her being nominated for the best actress award at the Cannes Film Festival in France, where she also received the best actress award at the Academy Awards. In her award-winning turn as the foul-mouthed and temperamental character of Bo Peep in the movie The Night That You Left Me, Li Bingbing established herself as not only an unforgettable character, but also as a renowned actress. For many years, Li Bingbing maintained a busy schedule of performing and appeared in a variety of well-known films, including The Woman Who Played with Chinese Humans (Wu Gui Zhen), Romance with an Englishman (Fu Gui) and Confucian Youth (Zhou Li). Her most common roles were roles which feature people of different ethnic backgrounds, and which have a strong Chinese influence.
Li Bingbing’s career in Hollywood was not without issues, however. On several occasions, Li Bingbing has been accused of plagiarizing others’ works, which resulted in both criticism and charges of plagiarism against her. Another of the incidents which brought her charges stemmed from the height heights of her net worth. While the charges against her were eventually dropped, she never lost the public’s respect for her work and remained on good terms with the entertainment industry for the rest of her life. Li Bingbing is a talented actress who has achieved great success in both the worlds of film and Hollywood.
