Marcus Thuram is a French international professional football player who currently plays as a right wing or centre forward for Bundesliga side Borussia Mönchengladbach. Marcus played his club football for three years with FC Barcelona before moving to Germany and signing for 1860 Munich where he spent two years as a trainee before being eligible to play for the France team. He played three times for the France squad that went to the European Championships and was part of their squad that qualified from their group however fell short of the tournament and went on to lose out to Italy in the semifinals.
Marcus Thymel embryo started his career at FC Barcelona as an attacking midfielder but moved into a more central role when Pep Guardiola decided that the Brazilian was better suited to a holding role. Marcus became a regular at right wing or centre back during his time at FCB and featured in a number of friendlies for the Brazil side and made a pair of appearances for the Seleccao under a coach named Koffi Rocha. During this time he also scored one goal in his three appearances. This did not go unnoticed as Rocha believed that Marcus was much better suited to a holding role than a striker.
Marcus’ best season for FC Barcelona came in 2021/6 where he started all thirty-one games for the club and helped them claim the title. Despite this impressive season he struggled on a defensive basis and did not start a further ninety-two games for the club. Despite this he did score one goal from twenty-one appearances, helping the club to qualify for the Champions League group stages where they were beaten by Italian giants Inter Milan in the first round. Although Barca ultimately lost their semi-finals against Chelsea in the final they were far from certain to win the treble and qualified comfortably.
Marcus Thuram is yet to feature for the national team and has only started eleven games. His best chance to earn a call up would be if coach Laurent Blanc decided that the right player for the right position was not available. Marcus is an excellent ball retention and passing player and has been likened by some neutrals to France legends Nicolas Sarkozy and Andre Legg. Despite this some French media have suggested that Marcus has fallen foul of the current regime due to his outspoken criticism of the likes of Hugo Lloris, David Pleat and Alan Smith of the national team and compared their coaching methods to those of the late Sir Alex Ferguson. If this is the case then it may be a long time before Marcus Thuram makes his reappearance for the United States.
Marcus Thuram is at an age where he should be starting to show what he can offer the USA, especially with the possibility of a World Cup in the next two years. Injuries have prevented Marcus from featuring in the USA’s qualification process for the forthcoming tournaments in Russia and England and many believe that his time in international football has come to an end. Marcus has been a great player for Reading and Villa as both clubs have needed him throughout the years and this season with the loss of Yohan Cabaye to injury and Thierry Henry to an extended period on the shelf, there has been a lack of cover around the forward position which has restricted Marcus Thuram to making just one start. Should the USA qualify for the tournament in Europe and go further than just fourth place, they will need Marcus to score a goal against Spain or Italy in their final group game in June to book their place in the finals.
Marcus Thuram has also featured for the US national team and has become known as a goalscorer both for the Under-20s and for the senior side. This season he has started well in the MLS and has been a regular in the Villa team and recently made a substitute appearance against Spurs for a 1-1 draw. Marcus has impressed with a number of good displays for the USA at the recent friendlies but with injuries limiting his role he is expected to start against Brazil in the World Cup finals. For anyone still unsure of Marcus Thuram’s ability this would be a great time to give him a chance in the UK and MLS.
