Ria Irawan is one of the most well-known Indonesian actresses and singer. Born in Jakarta she grew up in a modest house on the outskirts of the city. She is described by others as being a very sweet and charming girl who loved to sing. Her early years were spent in a boarding school, where she excelled in studies and English. In the year 1960, Ria Irawan enrolled at a vocational school in her native town, intending to continue her education in writing. Unfortunately, her parents lost their property to the then Indonesian government, and she was forced to leave home.

Ria Irawan then went to stay in a boarding school in Australia, where she excelled in studies. After completing a degree in law, Ria Irawan joined the cast of a play that was set to be broadcast in Indonesia and Singapore. In these years she honed her acting skills and gradually built a reputation as an excellent singer, both in Indonesia and Singapore. She performed in various popular television shows, movies and music videos. Ria Irawan gained international prominence in her career, which led to her receiving several honors and awards for her work as an actress in Indonesia and other Southeast Asian countries including Malaysia, Hong Kong and the Philippines.

Ria Irawan joined the Indonesian film industry in the year 1970. Her first film role was as an actress in an indie movie titled “Amores Perros” (The Perros Tree) starring Ng Quai. She then appeared in more movies in the decade which saw her rise to prominence as a Janjawari (chief executive) in the government of Aceh.

The late sixties and the early seventies saw Ria Irawan working in the marketing department of a textile factory in Jakarta while she continued to hone her acting skills. In these years she did some work in Hollywood and even received an Academy Award nomination for “Amores Perros” but did not win. Following her failed attempt at becoming a leading lady in the Indonesian film industry, Ria Irawan decided it was time to pursue an acting career in the United States of America.

On July 6th of 1969 Ria Irawan flew to Los Angeles to begin her career in Hollywood as an actress and of course an artist. She began to perform in numerous shows in the United States of America including “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”. Ria impressed many of her viewers with her acting skills and became known in Indonesia as Ria Kayohy. Later in 1969 she went to Indonesia and performed in “Reggie”, a musical which won four Academy Awards.

Ria Irawan is currently playing the lead role in the new M.A.S.H. movie which has been postponed due to her untimely death on April 7th. She will reprise her role of Mrs.” “In Memoriam” ” from the original “Istambo” jingle song. Ria Irawan is also currently filming a remake of the film “The Clicker” starring Dennis Hopper and Jennifer Aniston and is set to release a new all inclusive blockbuster titled “Riaisance” in January 2023.
