Siqin Gaowa (often pronounced SIE-kee-on) is a Chinese actress originally from Fujian province. Born in Fujian province, where she was a little girl, Siqin spent part of her childhood in China. She was actually born in Inner Mongolia, then moved to Shanghai as a child and then to Geneva, Switzerland. Now, in this present era, she is a Chinese American television star, Chinese American action star and also a celebrated author.

The first time I came across Siqin Gaowa’s name, I was very much interested to know more about her. At that time, I had just finished reading The Great Wall of China by Caihou Yang, a book which I found to be interesting. Siqin was one of the characters in that book who appeared to be an android. First, Siqin has appeared in more than twenty films, the most by any woman. Secondly, she has been nominated for the best actress Academy Awards thrice, which is the most by any female Chinese star outside of Madame Mao Tse Tung, and she is also the only woman from mainland China to have been nominated for the best actress Academy Award for the same category. This is indeed a remarkable achievement for a woman from another country, let alone the one she was born.

One would think that her best film would be the Hong Kong film Princess Mononoke, but this award goes to the animated comedy Welcome Mr. Khan, instead. Another award that Siqin won for best actress in 2023 was the Golden Rooster Award, given by the Professional Film Awards, an award jury composed of directors and producers from various countries. This award was presented to Siqin at the ceremony in Hollywood. Her movie that year was the second of the three-part film revival of Mulan, with the other two installments following in the same year.
